There are three magical axioms I live by and that all of my students in Liberation Magic get to learn. Today, I want to share a really deep concept embedded in one of them.

The axiom goes: speaking truth is the path to liberation.

While it sounds kind of grandiose (and it can absolutely be applied to vast societal change, as in ‘speaking truth to power’), what's more practical for most people in their everyday lives is the ability to admit their own truth to themselves, and then speak it.

This doesn't mean publishing it on social media or telling everybody you know. But it does mean being able to admit to yourself what is actually going on with you. And telling that to at least one other person, so it's no longer your secret alone, is incredibly transformative. Being witnessed in that way is more powerful than most people expect.

Let me tell you about a friend of mine. She had a very successful job. It was something she'd wanted to achieve for a very long time. The kind of job that makes a mother proud, brings in multiple six figures a year, and earns genuine admiration and respect.

She worked so hard to get there that it took her a very, very long time to understand that even though it was what she wanted, even though she'd worked toward it for literal years, the actual lived reality of working that job made her miserable.

What she thought was going to be this great thing turned out to make her deeply unhappy. And she didn't admit it to herself for a long time. What do you mean this wasn't it? And holy cow, if I don't do this, then what am I going to do? How am I going to make money? Where does my sense of identity come from?

None of those questions can begin to be answered until we're able to admit to ourselves what's actually going on.

When my friend finally saw that clearly and shared it with me, it was a profound breakthrough moment. It was like the Tower card in the tarot: the destruction of old structures that no longer serve us. (Some of us think Western civilization is going through its own Tower moment, but that's neither here nor there.)
