It’s super amusing that to this day, deep into 2026, already a quarter of a century into the 21st century, people still wonder if witches “are real.” This question is not framed correctly.

The question is not “Are witches real?”, but rather “Do I know what a witch is?”

Same with magic: the question is not whether or not it’s real, it's whether I understand it. Same is true about climate change, btw, it’s real whether you want it to be or not - and I don’t want it to be real, but it still is. Like a friend said, the question is not whether I “believe” in climate change, but whether I understand that it actually is real.

The way I define witch is someone who remembers their power and uses it to shape her reality. See also: a steward of truth and possibility, a woman who feels the power inside her, and knows how to use it. Rooted in spiritual freedom and guided by Earth and Spirit, a Bruja is a builder of new realities and practices magic as an act of liberation that’s personal, ancestral, and collective.

However, I was TODAY years old when I googled “what is a witch” and this is what Wikipedia had to say:

Traditionally, "witchcraft" means the use of magic to inflict supernatural harm or misfortune on others, and this remains the most common and widespread meaning.

OH SHIT. No wonder so many people are confused about this. So let me clarify…that wikipedia definition is the equivalent to climate deniers. Here is some information that may be news to you:

You either ARE a witch, or you NEED a witch. Let me explain.

Historically
In human communities, there has always been a person who was the medicine woman or medicine man, the shaman, the seer, the healer, the prophet.

Pre-colonization and definitely pre-industrialization, every single person on Earth had access to someone like that, or was that person themselves.

We all need access to support and mentors that can guide us spiritually and practically, help us when we’re confused, support us when we’re hurting, and/ or we are one of these people ourselves. And even then, we need our own support and guidance.

In our modern world
We act like these things are "woo-woo" or they're not real or they're not scientific, but it's not my fault that science hasn't caught up with the vast nature of reality. There has been a lot written about how misogyny and formalized medicine took away from the powerful women who healed with plants. Or how witches have been demonized as a form of power-grabbing and control. So there are totally sensible explanations for how and why applied spirituality has been canceled.

What this misses, however, is that in order to:

  • have a full life

  • have access to what can help you after trauma

  • grow spiritually

  • feel connected to your people

  • love your family in a healthy way

  • grieve the losses that are inherent parts of life

  • do anything that makes you truly humans

We need to be in deep relationship with ourselves, spirit, and nature, and this is easier to do with guidance and in community.

I'm sharing this today because I want to normalize the idea of magic.

I want to normalize not just the existence of witches and the fact that we're of course not evil or wicked, but in fact absolutely necessary for community well-being.

If you're inclined to believe that you are one of us, you probably are… no one takes on the charge of the word witch by accident. If you are one of us but are scared to fully own the role, come out of the broom closet, or acknowledge even to yourself what your soul already knows, please get on board ASAP because the world needs you freaking desperately. (And if you need support with this reply to this email so we can talk).

And even if you're not, you probably have somebody in your life that plays that role and is your go-to person for support and magic. If you don't think you have such a person, start looking for one, because your life will be exponentially better once you do.
